Indian Stock Market Falls as Rising Oil Prices Worry Investors; Sensex and Nifty Recover to Close Higher

Date:

Indian stock markets registered heavy volatility on Monday, as high crude oil prices, uncertainties in West Asia, and the upcoming decision of the US Federal Reserve policy affected the investor psychology. However, the benchmark indices managed to reverse their initial losses and closed the trading session in positive territory, amid strong earnings reports and sector-wise buying.

The BSE Sensex index gained 482.92 points or 0.66% to close at 73,606.75, whereas the NSE Nifty 50 index rose 153.20 points or 0.68% to close at 22,753.20. The rebounding came on the heels of tough times for Indian equity markets as both benchmark indices lost ground during the last four days of trading.

What Caused the Indian Stock Market to Fall in Early Trading?

The Indian equity markets started their trading negatively, due to the increased crude oil prices and concerns regarding global energy supply. During the early morning trading, the Sensex index fell more than 500 points, while the Nifty 50 index also registered a hefty decline.

The price of the Brent crude, the benchmark of the global crude oil, was at 114-115 per barrel during the session, after an increase in the

Both energy prices and indications from the US central bank have drawn attention among the market players in order to determine the future direction of the equity market.

Corporate Earnings Back Market Rally

Though there was weakness seen during the session start, buying sentiment in some heavyweights aided Indian benchmark indices to reverse and end in green. Fifteen out of 16 major sectoral indices as well as broader market indices ended higher.

The metal index rose 2.2% on the back of better-than-expected quarterly numbers of JSW Steel. Pharmaceuticals shares also did well on the back of positive results. Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories shares rallied after delivering better-than-expected quarterly numbers, while Kotak Mahindra Bank also gained on better than expected quarterly numbers.

On the contrary, there were some laggards in the form of Shriram Finance which fell after cutting its annual loan growth forecast.

What Should Investors Focus On Next?

There are certain issues which can determine market trend in the coming sessions:

Oil prices: Any rise in price levels will lead to increased fears of inflation, cost of imports, etc.

Geo-political events: Events taking place in West Asia can influence energy supplies, risk perceptions, etc.

Fed policy: Fed policy in its October meeting can have an impact on liquidity conditions, yields and investments, etc.

Corporate earnings: Quarterly earnings, earnings forecasts, etc., can be significant for the performance of the stocks in question and the particular sectors.

Foreign investor flows: Foreign investment flows can change depending on oil prices, foreign exchange conditions, valuations, international interest rates, etc.

Despite all these, market may continue to experience high volatility levels, even if domestic stocks get a boost from positive corporate results or domestic inflows.

Conclusion

There was volatility and then an overall positive performance in the Indian equity market on October 26, 2026. Although the higher price of crude oil, uncertainty in geopolitics, and the potential policy decisions of the United States caused investors to sell at the beginning of the trading day, better company performance and overall buying led the Sensex and Nifty indices higher.

The market participants will watch the crude oil price level, developments in the global economy, and future financial performance of companies for signals regarding the direction in which the market is headed.
